Their Eyes Were Watching God #2

Discussion Questions

1. How would you describe Janie and Joe’s relationship?

2. What are Janie’s disadvantages of living in a small community in the Jim Crow south“

3. How does Janies life change when widowed?

I wrote the poem based on the possessiveness Janies husband held for her hair. He never allowed anyone to see it after an incident involving another man touching it at a store sent him into a rage.

My Hair

My hair should be mine

But you managed to claim it’s rights

Wrap it up in the the store

No other man can see or touch what is yours

My hair should be mine

The night of your passing

Each hair rag was burnt to ashes

In one thick braid

My hair swung below my waist

On display for the world to see

                                                                My hair is mine
